The Boo Joins Ickle Pickle
16 years ago, at the end of August | 3 Comments
For me 2008 has so far been one of the worst years ever. With the loss of Rikki earlier and now the loss of Rhubarb (aka The Boo, PooBah, Boobie). On Wednesday of last week Rhubarb stopped eating and started being sick. A trip to the vet for antibiotic and pain killing injections didn’t seem to be working. He couldn’t eat. Everything he ate or drank just came back out. It was scarily similar to Rikki’s passing and horrendous to watch. On Sunday he really went downhill hardly able to move, even lifting his head was too much. At 5:45pm he slipped away from us.
When Rikki died it was a little easier for us since all the doggie toys, food, treats and beds were for Rhubarb to use. Now that he’s gone there are so many things that remind me of him. When you live your life around your dogs making sure you close doors, filling up water bowls, making sure they go outside before bed and the walks it’s so very difficult, even after this one day, to face the emptiness of the house.
It was fairly clear after Rikki died that Rhubarb was unhappy. While she was alive he used to grumble at her and move away if she came close, but when she got sick he would snuggle up to her. We always knew he loved her really.

My ‘Ickle Pickle’ has gone…
16 years ago, mid-April | 2 Comments
… and I’m heartbroken. Rikki, (aka ‘ickle pickle’, ‘icky pooh’ and ‘lambkins’), became ill very suddenly with renal failure. After attempts by the local vet to save her it became clear that nothing was working. I rushed home (from the UK to NL) on Thursday so I could spend a few hours with her before she went. On Friday 11th April 2008 the local vet came to our home to release Rikki from her pain. I was, and still am, devastated.
Rikki’s life wasn’t so good before we rescued her. Before she was 2 she had given birth to 2 litters, both via cesarean section. Any responsible vet would have neutered her after the first. She came to us petrified. I think we gave her as much love and affection as possible and she returned it. I think I’m right in saying that in the years we were together she learned to trust us and feel safe.
